Upper Key Stage Two Class 2022 - 2023

Mrs Phillips

Welcome to our class page!

We are a class of amazing year 5 and 6 children. Our class is mainly taught by Mrs Phillips and Mr Pearson, however we are lucky enough to have several other adults working with us throughout the week.

Year 5 and 6 involve lots of hard work but we manage to have a lot of fun too. Keep a look out on our facebook page for updates about our learning.

During the spring term our History topic is the Evacuees in Our Local Area. Our science topic is animals including humans and in RE our focus is Islam

Our class book this term is 'A Boy Called Hope' by an amazing author, Lara Williamson. We're looking foward to delving into the story.

Our class newsletter is attached below, with further information about what to expect from our days in school.

How can I help and support my child at school?

There are so many ways in which you can help support your child's learning at home.

Reading - please listen to your child read as often as you can and talk about what they have read. All children will have a school reading book and we do ask them to read this regularly however we also encourage the children to find other interesting texts to read together at home e.g. articles in the local paper; non-fiction books about a hobby; books from the library; an online blog or a recipe for a cake. It is really important that children have their records in school every day as we record other reading in school here too.

Maths - tables tables tables! Chant them, test each other in the car, do them backwards, find the corresponding division facts, make up games with thousands of points for the winner! Please help your child to know their times tables inside out - this will help them so much in all other areas of maths. We also do lots of practice in general of mental arithmetic in class e.g. near doubles and halves, rounding, quick fire addition and subtraction.

Homework

Homework this year will be given out on a Friday and will be due in on the following Wednesday. Please support your child in completing their homework if you are able to.

Spellings will be sent home on Monday and tested the following Monday to give children a full week to learn them. It is very important that children practice these at home so please support them in this.

Homework will have different focuses each week: reading, SPaG, maths and writing and will often link with what they have been learning in school. Children will also be sent home times tables to learn, which they will be tested on the following week as well.
